AGC supports efforts to make New Mexico a better place to do business. Take action that boosts the income of state residents creating better jobs. Actions that would encourage this include a focus on educating our workforce at all levels and in all industries. Develop an environment in this state that encourages and supports technological innovation. Work to make businesses in New Mexico competitive with others throughout the Southwest. Work to streamline government at all levels. Create incentives that help employers add to the innovation capacity and productivity of New Mexicans. Reward training, research and development, and new capital investment by industry throughout the state.

A business-friendly state that encourages economic growth and invests in the future is the ideal place to do business. A state of ‘good economic health’ in New Mexico is good for everyone. Economics is the theoretical science that deals with the allocation of scarce resources among alternatives. Wouldn’t it be nice to have abundant resources like labor, capital, cash, materials, and business opportunities rather than a shortage of any of these? The resources for business within our state will become more available (more abundant) if we make New Mexico attractive to business.

Such plans will not work in New Mexico. We have proven it time and time again, what works in other places never works here.

Shake off the words of the past and take action now to change the future. Review the results of our state’s current tax policies. Though it is hard to encourage action through tax policy in a state where the system is based upon a gross receipts tax—think creatively and find something that works. Focus on growing the businesses already here through policy and incentives that encourage educating and training the workforce, increase competition and innovation, and increase the productivity of the New Mexico economy.
